“I remember when ‘Bloodsport’ came out-I used to watch that movie over and over again,” he said. He was an obsessive consumer of movies and TV and saw them as subjects to be mastered as much as relished. He began to speak about the pop culture of his childhood. When I asked him why he had chosen Beverly Hills, after deciding to leave his home town of Cleveland for Southern California, in 2019, he said, without a glimmer of a smile, “Axel Foley”-Eddie Murphy’s character in the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise.
